Explore the Hardangerfjord up close
RIB safaris with local guides
From the road, you see parts of the Hardangerfjord between tunnels, villages and bends. By boat, you can follow the shoreline and look straight up the mountainsides. Our RIB safaris explore three fjord branches: Osafjord, Simadalsfjord and Fyksesund, with different routes departing from Ulvik, Norheimsund and Øystese.
You can join us while staying in Hardanger or make the journey from Bergen or Voss. The best starting point depends on where you are staying and which part of the fjord you want to see.

Three branches of the Hardangerfjord
Osafjord:
Our Osafjord tours depart from Ulvik. As we enter the fjord branch, steep, wooded slopes rise on either side, with waterfalls running down towards the water. Along the way, we stop for photographs and guiding. These pauses give you time to look more closely at the shoreline and hear about life beside the fjord.

Simadalsfjord:
Simadalsfjord reaches inland near Eidfjord, beneath steep mountain walls. On routes that include this branch, you see another part of the inner Hardangerfjord from the water. The mountains dominate the view, but our guiding also covers the people and local history behind the landscape.
Fyksesund:
From Norheimsund or Øystese, we head towards Fyksesund. Further into this narrow fjord branch, the road ends and the mountains close in around the water. At the head lies Botnen, an old settlement without a road connection. We approach waterfalls and stop along the way to explain how people lived and travelled here when the fjord was their main route to the outside world.

Getting to the departure point
Choose your departure point before planning the rest of your day:
- From Bergen or Voss:
Norheimsund and Øystese are the starting points for our Fyksesund tours. Allow roughly 80–90 minutes by car from Bergen to Norheimsund, and a little longer to Øystese. From Voss, the drive takes around 75–90 minutes, depending on your departure point.
- From Eidfjord, Lofthus, or Voss:
Ulvik is the starting point for our tours into Osafjord and, on selected routes, Simadalsfjord. Allow around 30 minutes by car from Eidfjord, or 45–50 minutes from Lofthus or Voss. only 35–50 minutes drive away, ensuring a convenient and exciting way to explore the fjord during your stay.
If you are travelling by public transport, check both the outward and return connections before choosing a departure. Use the meeting time in your booking confirmation when planning your arrival.

What is a RIB safari like?
You sit outdoors, close to the water, with an open view of the fjord. There are faster stretches between stops, followed by pauses near waterfalls, mountain walls and places your guide wants to show you. The pace depends on the conditions on the day.
With up to 12 guests in each boat, there is room to ask questions along the way. Your captain also acts as your guide, sharing local history and explaining what you are looking at. We provide flotation suits, life jackets and goggles before departure.
Plan your fjord trip
Start with the departure point, then compare the routes and durations. Norheimsund is our year-round base, while Ulvik and Øystese have seasonal departures. Each tour page shows the route, meeting point and available dates.
Check which fjord branches are included in the tour you choose. Departing from Ulvik does not mean every trip visits both Osafjord and Simadalsfjord. If you are unsure which option fits your plans, send us your travel date and where you are staying.
