The Legacy of Hardanger Cider

Hardangerfjord is renowned as the heartland of Norwegian cider and apple juice. The tradition dates back to the 13th century when Cistercian monks introduced apple cultivation to the region. The unique microclimate along the fjord, with long, warm summer days and cool autumn nights, creates the perfect conditions for growing high-quality apples. These apples, including varieties like Discovery, Aroma, Gravenstein, and Summerred, are meticulously pressed and processed to produce cider that boasts a light, sour, and aromatic apple taste.

“Sider frå Hardanger” is not just any cider—it’s a symbol of quality and heritage. As Norway’s first alcoholic beverage to receive the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) label, Hardanger cider meets stringent criteria that ensure every bottle reflects the unique terroir and meticulous craftsmanship of the region. This designation guarantees that you’re enjoying a genuine taste of Norway’s finest apple-producing area.

Embarking on the Fruit and Cider Route in Ulvik

Your Hardangerfjord adventure begins in the picturesque village of Ulvik, home to the only Fruit and Cider Route in Norway. On this path you can visit some of the region's finest 3  cider farms, each offering a unique glimpse into the art of cider making.

Ulvik proudly upholds a long-standing tradition of cider production, emerging as the pioneering area during the cider renaissance of the 1990s. This charming village set the stage for what has become a thriving cider industry in Hardangerfjord.

Exploring Hardanger’s Cider Heartlands

Moving towards Sørfjorden in Ullensvang Municipality, you'll discover the region's current cider epicenter, home to around 20 dedicated cider farms. In the past decade alone, Sørfjorden has witnessed remarkable growth, solidifying its reputation as the most prolific cider-producing area in Hardangerfjord. Here, many farms feature their own farm shops, offering visitors the chance to purchase fresh cider and related products directly from the source.

During the summer months, these farms host scheduled tastings, allowing enthusiasts to sample a diverse range of ciders and engage with passionate producers. Noteworthy locations like Naa and Lofthus boast the highest concentration of cider farms, making them essential stops on your cider exploration journey.

Further expanding the cider landscape, Kvam Municipality presents additional opportunities for cider aficionados. Situated around the picturesque townships of Norheimsund and Øystese, this areas also have cider producers that are easily accessible via day tours from Bergen.

Tasting and buying directly from the producers

One of the highlights of visiting the cider farms is the chance to taste and purchase exclusive products directly from the producers. Whether you prefer a dry, crisp finish or a sweet, velvety sip, the diverse range of ciders available ensures there's something to delight every palate. Additionally, explore the variety of handcrafted apple juices, known locally as eplemost, which offer an excellent non-alcoholic alternative, perfect for any occasion.
