About the trip
Fyksesund is a narrow branch of the Hardangerfjord, surrounded by high mountains and with a sheltered, roadless inner section. On this three-hour experience, you travel from Norheimsund to the floating location in a comfortable enclosed boat – accompanied only by your own group, the skipper and the guide.
The boat journey is an important part of the experience. The enclosed boat provides shelter from wind and rain, allowing you to stay warm and follow the changing landscape as you travel deeper into the fjord. As Fyksesund narrows, there is less boat traffic and the houses become fewer. The waterfalls and mountainsides change character with the season and weather.
The journey
From Norheimsund to Fyksesund by enclosed boat
We meet you at the reception of Thon Hotel Sandven before departing from Norheimsund. The skipper introduces the journey and takes your group onto the Hardangerfjord and into Fyksesund.
You remain sheltered on board as the surroundings change from the village waterfront in Norheimsund to the narrow, roadless inner part of the fjord.
Fjord floating beneath steep mountains
At the floating location, you go ashore for an equipment and safety briefing. The guide helps you into an insulated immersion suit before you enter the fjord.
The suit provides insulation and buoyancy in the cold water. No swimming skills are required. As you lean back, you can watch the mountains rise directly from the fjord while feeling the small movements of the water.
Most guests spend approximately 30–45 minutes in the water. The exact time is adapted to the conditions and each participant’s comfort. The guide remains close throughout the session.
Changing and refreshments on board
After the floating session, you leave the water and return to the enclosed boat. You change into dry clothes on board before the boat sets course back to Norheimsund.
Warm drinks and snacks are served on board during the return journey. You can stay warm, relax and watch Fyksesund and the Hardangerfjord from the boat as you travel back.
Digital photos from the floating session are sent to you after the tour, allowing you to leave your phone safely behind while you are in the water.

A private day experience from Bergen
Norheimsund is approximately 80–90 minutes from Bergen by car or direct bus. As the starting time is agreed in advance, we can, where possible, plan it around your group’s journey from Bergen.
The bus terminal in Norheimsund is approximately 50 metres from Thon Hotel Sandven. Check the latest timetable with Skyss and let us know in your enquiry if you intend to travel by bus.
Transport between Bergen and Norheimsund is not included.
Additional information
Every participant receives instructions and assistance with the equipment before entering the water. The immersion suits must fit correctly, so we collect the height, weight and shoe size of each participant before the tour.
After the floating session, you change into dry clothes inside the enclosed boat. Bring clothes that are easy to change in and out of.
The skipper assesses the weather and fjord conditions before departure. The route, starting time or operation may be adjusted if conditions require it.

The tour cannot be booked directly through an online calendar. Send us an enquiry with your preferred date and group size. We will check boat and guide availability and send you a written proposal.
2. Are the boat journey and floating session private?
Yes. Both the boat journey and the floating session are arranged exclusively for your group. The maximum capacity is 10 participants, subject to suitable immersion-suit sizes being available for everyone.
3. What type of boat is used?
The journey is made in a comfortable enclosed boat. You remain sheltered from wind and rain while travelling between Norheimsund and Fyksesund. After floating, you change into dry clothes inside the boat.
4. Where is the meeting point?
We meet at the reception of Thon Hotel Sandven in Norheimsund. The hotel is approximately 50 metres from the main bus terminal and close to the boat’s departure point.
5. Can we travel from Bergen by public transport?
Yes. Direct buses operate between Bergen and Norheimsund, with a typical journey time of approximately 80–90 minutes. Tell us that you intend to travel by bus when sending your enquiry, so the starting time can, where possible, be planned around the timetable.
6. What age, height and weight restrictions apply?
Participants must be at least 13 years old, between 150 and 210 cm tall and weigh no more than 120 kg. These limits relate to the sizes and capacity of the immersion suits.
7. Do we need swimming skills?
No. The immersion suit keeps you afloat. You receive instructions before entering the water, and the guide remains nearby throughout the floating session.
8. How long do we spend in the water?
Most guests spend 30–45 minutes in the water. The complete experience lasts approximately three hours, including the boat journeys, changing into the immersion suits, floating, changing into dry clothes on board and returning to Norheimsund.
9. Will we be cold or wet?
The immersion suits are designed for cold-water conditions and provide insulation and buoyancy. A small amount of moisture can occasionally enter around the face opening. Wear warm layers underneath the suit and bring a dry change of clothes. You change inside the enclosed boat after floating.
10. What happens in poor weather?
The enclosed boat provides shelter from wind and rain during the journey. The skipper still assesses wind, visibility and fjord conditions before departure. If the experience cannot be operated safely, we will contact you to agree on an alternative arrangement.
11. Can we bring phones or cameras into the water?
Personal phones and standard cameras must remain ashore or on the boat. Action cameras may be used when conditions allow. We take digital photos during the floating session and send them after the tour. Drone photos may be taken when the weather, location and current regulations allow.
